- The band name "Pool of Frogs" is more than just a clever grouping of nouns. It is, in fact, a rather highbrow, literary allusion to The Frogs, a work by 4th century B.C. playwright, Aristophanes. The chorus that narrarates this play is an omnipotent pool of frogs. It is the story of the Greek god Dionysus impersonating Hercules on a journey through Hell. The play involves monsters, torture, virgins, betrayal, mistaken identity, and it comes about as close to encapsulating the band's ethos as any work of fiction before or since. Pool of Frogs is the chorus of our collective, everyday tragedies happening right now. The group's approach can range from beautifully bittersweet to angry, but it’s always sincere....
- Lead singer and songwriter Chad Barney Fess puts every last drop into his fuck-all vocals while wielding his acoustic guitar like a medieval mace. Bassist Brenton Engel, guitar/keys sideman Blake Sloane, and
drummer Will Duncan comprise the dynamic backing band that can either tread lightly or rock ecstatic with every nuance of Fess' unpredictable approach. Celebratory, passionate performances are this group's pride and joy. The band's style was born from the marriage of Chad and Brent's backwoods approach and the modern rock 'n roll sensibilities of city slickers Will and Blake - a robust balance of Apollonian and Dionysian influence. They recorded their debut long player between Electrical Audio and Engine Studios, both in their home base of Chicago. Self-titled, the disc captures the groups raw, live energy with merely a few overdubs.
- With three years performing regularly in Chicago and two Eastern U.S. tours under its belt, Pool of Frogs is currently working on its second album which will be the antithesis of their first. Look out for it in Autumn of 2009.
